09.08.2010 - Abercrombie Campaign Reports Surge in Support, Contributions in Final Months
Neil Abercrombie’s campaign for governor raised about $717,000 in the last two months, more than the total amount raised in the first six months of this year.
In a filing today with the state Campaign Spending Commission, the Abercrombie for Governor campaign raised about $717,000 from July 1 to Sept. 3, 2010. From January 1 to June 30, the campaign raised $711,655.
“We have seen a significant surge in contributions in these final months,” said Bill Kaneko, campaign manager. “While we are still the underdogs in terms of total money raised over the course of the campaign, we have exceeded our goals and have the momentum as we enter the final ten days before the Primary Election.”
Of the more than 3,300 contributions received in this 2-month reporting period, 2,590 were from grassroots supporters in donations of $100 or less.
“This campaign has always been about bringing in people new to the political process, first-time donors, and those wanting to change the status quo,” Kaneko said. “Voters have a clear choice on primary day: the campaign funded by wealthy interests that want to keep Hawaii the way it is, or our grassroots campaign of people who want real change.”
Since March 2009, when Abercrombie announced his candidacy for governor, the campaign has raised more than $2.7 million. The campaign has about $250,000 cash on hand. The campaign continues to receive contributions in the final days before the Primary Election on Sept. 18.

08.26.2010 - Statement from Neil Abercrombie on Forged Letter
Neil Abercrombie released the following statement today on a forged letter being circulated that makes accusations against Mufi Hannemann:
“According to news reports, an obviously forged letter that makes accusations against Mufi Hannemann and purports to be from Russell Figueiroa is being distributed to people in Hawaii. This forged letter and any such acts like it are despicable and the perpetrators should be caught and punished. They do nothing but harm to our entire community.
“Particularly in this age of instant communications, all citizens have a responsibility to carefully consider what is presented to them. It is important that we not let the juvenile acts of a few people degrade and corrupt our political system. When something such as this letter appears—something so obviously done with malice and distributed in such a cowardly manner—I believe it is best for people to dismiss it and condemn it into oblivion where it belongs.”

08.24.2010 - Statement by Neil Abercrombie on Race to the Top funds
Neil Abercrombie released the following statement today on Hawaii being selected as a winner in “Race to the Top” school reform competition:
“Today’s announcement that Hawaii was selected as a winner in the ‘Race to the Top’ school reform competition will echo for generations. It is a proud day for Hawaii.
“‘Race to the Top’ reforms are part of the comprehensive education plan that I released in April. Now that we know they will be funded, we can ensure that principals, teachers, parents and students have the proper support, incentives, tools, expectations, and authority to make their schools great.
“Back in January when Hawaii submitted the first application, we were concerned that furlough Fridays would hurt our chances. When the first application was rejected, Hawaii's team, led by Kathy Matayoshi and leaders from the private and public sectors, quickly turned disappointment into determination. They learned from the feedback they received, garnered more widespread community support, and made a clear and convincing presentation to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the Obama Administration. Out of adversity, Hawaii emerged at the top.
“The result is $75 million to improve our public schools. But just as important, our ‘Race to the Top’ team has given us all a reason to believe that a new day really is coming for Hawaii—one where everyone works through differences for the common good; one where we have confidence in our public schools; one where every child has the opportunity to reach her or his full potential.
“If given the honor of being Hawaii’s next Governor, I will work closely with the Obama Administration to make sure our ‘Race to the Top’ plan is implemented.”
